‍Braille Trail

The Eagle Candidate would design and install a walking/hiking trail that would be accessible to sight-impaired/blind visitors. Navigation would be assisted by a rope or "cable" handrail, and interpretive points signaled by knots. The interp points would be places where braille plaques wound advise the visitor that there are plants to smell or touch, sounds to listen for, or landscapes that represent history, geology, archaeology, flora and fauna, a lagoon etc.

‍Transfer Boards for Rehab Patients

Many patients who are recovering from strokes and spinal cord injuries need help to transfer between wheelchairs, chairs, car seats, etc. Shaped plywood boards, approximately 8" x 18", called transfer boards are used for this purpose. Patients with limited mobility sit on one end of the board and slide to the other side. Thus, the surface needs to be very smooth so that it's easy for sliding. Physical therapists would love to have as many transfer boards as possible, since patients who need one often take one home to use. This would be a huge benefit for these patients and for the rehab center.

‍Bonita Vista High School Green Spaces Initiative

Bonita Vista High School is an Urban Heat Island in need of more greens spaces, native gardens and maintenance. We currently have a native garden that needs maintenance as well as overall non-native plant removal weeding around the school and mulching areas in need. There are a green spaces that need updating on campus and would love a scout to design areas using natives and xeriscaping. In addition, we are looking for Eagle Scouts to build and put up Owl Boxes and Bat Boxes around the campus as well as near the native garden. There is money already designated for plants, mulch and soil through a grant, the cost of the project is centered around the cost needed fo materials to build and install owl/bat boxes.

Presidio Park Improvements‍

A variety of improvements to Presidio Park in Old Town / Mission Hills are needed, including improvements to the Recreation Center, renovation of the cobblestone swales throughout the historic park, and clean-up of existing trails within the park. Specific projects can be scoped to fit the interests and resources of Scouts.

‍Refinish three outdoor tables and 12 chairs

‍The City Heights/Weingart branch of the San Diego Public Library has some heavy wooden outdoor tables and chairs that have seen better days. The tables and chairs are functional but need to be sanded and re-stained or painted. My husband is very proud of his own Eagle Scout badge and did a similar project for his local park. The work can be done at the library and we can provide the paint/stain and sand paper, perhaps other supplies as needed.

School Garden Bed Replacement and Site Improvement

‍Toler Elementary has six new metal garden beds that need to be set up and filled with soil, and the old wooden beds removed. In addition, ten cubic yards of mulch need to be spread on a hillside that contains native plants and a fence built to protect new native plants. We may be able to provide some of the funding for the fence.

‍Name mountains at Soledad Park in the La Jolla area of San Diego

‍Visitors routinely ask what mountains are seen to the East sand North of the park. The visitors referred to are asking docents at the Mt Soledad Veterans Memorial at the park. I envision some sort of bench/table/post apparatus along the east fence line identifying the mountains beyond. The placement of identifiers would be on park land so San Diego Park and Rec would have to be involved. I recently was offered access to a large map that was requisitioned(?) by the Walter Munk family that contains some of the necessary data for identification of the mountains.

‍Pass the Bricks

‍Pass the Bricks is a non-profit organization, where ambassadors operate independently across the world to collect used LEGO bricks, clean them, and redistribute to them to kids in their respective communities. There is one set of ambassadors in San Diego - Kristine & her 5 year old son Mateo - and we have a LOT (an overwhelming number!) of donated LEGO bricks. We would love help cleaning, sorting, creating sets, and finding organizations in the community that need sets for the people they serve. If you like playing with LEGO bricks while also serving children in the community, this is the project for you!

‍My name is Zac Hansen with the County of San Diego. Our partner, the San Diego Military Family Childcare Drop In Center, is seeking someone to build and install their Little Free Library. ‍La Jolla Elementary School Garden Beds

La Jolla Elementary School Garden needs 5-10 additional garden beds to serve our 1st through 5th grade students. Currently some beds are too small and some beds are shared by up to 3 classrooms. Parent volunteers take students to the garden for planting, garden related lessons, and harvesting throughout the year. Current beds range in size from 2'wX4'dX2'h to 3'w X 10'd X 3'h.
